Vehicle Registration Renewal
Note: Under New Jersey law effective July 1, 2024, zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) are subject to an annual fee in addition to the existing registration fee. The additional fee applies to any vehicle certified as a ZEV pursuant to the California Air Resources Board ZEV standards for the applicable model year. The additional fee is payable in full at the time of initial registration and at every renewal. Beginning July 1, 2024, the annual fee is $250. The annual fee increases $10 per year for four years thereafter.
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) is in the process of programming changes to implement the new fee. For ZEV registration renewals due between July 1, 2024, and November 1, 2024, that have already been mailed out to the customer, the ZEV owner will receive a supplemental notice with the additional fee due
There are three ways to renew your annual vehicle registration:
Same-Day Online Renewal
You can renew your registration online. Once you have completed the process, your registration renewal is effective immediately. Check the List of eligible codes for online renewal
Renew Your Registration Online
Renewing in-person
If you are ineligible to renew online, you must make an appointment to renew your registration.
- Registration Renewal Notice or Vehicle Identification Number
- Your insurance card or company name and policy number
- License plate number
- Proof of ID (Driver license or other primary ID document. See 6 Points of ID for more information). Read more about the 6 Points of ID.
- Power of Attorney if renewing a registration for someone else
- The amount due indicated in your renewal notice. You can pay by cash, money order, checks (payable to NJMVC), credit or debit card
- Completed Application for Vehicle Registration (Form BA-49)
- Schedule an Appointment
What to do at the agency
- Complete the Registration Renewal document, front and back (if not completed at home).
- Pay the fee and show the above documents at the designated registration window.
